To revise or not to revise...

Today is Woman's Day, so first thing that I want to do is paid tribute to all you lovely ladies out there. May you be blessed. :-)

Woman's Day is a public holiday in my country, so I put in some extra time yesterday so that I could have the whole day off today.

The plan was to revise thirty pages of Doorways, or to read. Instead, I'm typing this from in front of the t.v. For some reason, I just don't feel like doing anything more consuming than that.

Usually I don't feel all that guilty, but today I do. I mean, I made time to write. Why aren't I writing?

I'm thinking that I'll push myself to do some revisions later, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to get anything productive done.

What do you do when you just don't feel like writing/revising, even when you planned to do it?

  1. There is always something to do besides write. Although some days ore more packed than others, for me the trick is to make sure I set aside time to write.

Nothing wrong with relaxing, Misha, and working a bit harder tomorrow.

  2. We all need a day off now and then. (and one that isn't filled with running mass errands and social events!) Maybe your batteries just need recharged. Take some time, relax, revitalize, and try again. The important thing is not to make a habit out of it!

  3. Considering how extremely productive you are, I think you deserve a little television time. At the rate you're going, you'll have that book revised in record time. Congrats on all you've achieved so far!

  4. Set up a reward for yourself for after you get it done. Go somewhere you want to or spend time doing something really frivolous, but not until you hit your goal. My nighttime writing time I seem really good about, but during the day, I have to do that.

  5. I try to ease into it. I start with a writing prompt. I really like Natalie Goldberg's book An Old Friend From Far Away. Once I've started writing about something it is easier to transition into something else.
    Good luck

  6. I would never have guessed that you were editing and revising. That seems so shocking to me. :P

  7. I read! Usually reading a good book makes me excited to get back my own writing.

  8. Hope you get through your revisions. When I don't feel like revising, I do something for me. Reward myself first and then work later. Backwards I know, but it works for me.

  9. I wait for a better moment, I'd only mess up what I've written already.

  10. Good luck with your revisions!

I read, blog, or work on another non-writing project.

  11. What a great idea, to have a Woman's Day. Maybe one day soon, other countries will follow your lead.

Regarding not feeling like writing/editing: put it aside a while, do something deeply passionate and enjoyable, savor the passion of that experience...and then come back to your writing.

  12. My day is so like that today, as well. I have my ms to finish and some development to work on, along with some reading. Instead, my older son and I are playing apps on the ipad. I think I just need a day to veg out. Maybe you do, too. Don't feel badly. We all need to rest sometime.

  13. Don't feel bad! Sometimes we just need a break to veg and do something else, even if we planned to do something writing related. I find watching a movie/tv show or reading a book can be a great way to refresh my brain.

  14. You do what you can if you can, and something else if you can't.

But realize some days are better than others.

Enjoy your holiday, rest and tomorrow is another day.

  15. Hi, Misha,

I took a day off too... I should be working on my new scene in my revision and I just can't seem to get into it. I know what I want to write, but I.... rather blog! LOL. I spent most of the day catching up with old friends.

  16. Usually I think a little about how much I've done recently, and then make a decision about whether I'm justified in slacking off -- if I am, I enjoy it wholeheartedly! And if not, I pick a time I'm going to get to work, and tell somebody so I'm accountable.

  17. Sometimes a break away from the writing routine is the best way to get that enthusiasm back again. When I don't feel like doing proper writing I write my blog and I visit other people's blogs... like now!

  18. I read, because then it makes me feel like I'm at least accomplishing something. :) Although watching tv-- there are a LOT of things you can be inspired on. Plot, characters, settings.... TV isn't all bad. Especially on a holiday!

  19. Hey Misha, I'm passing on a blog award and an internet meme to you on today's post.

  20. I read and ... I take notes. Still writing, I guess, but just in short snippets of thought that will spark my imagination later!
