I just don't feel like writing.

I really can't believe that more than a week has passed since I last posted. I kept thinking that I'd at least post once more, but somehow, that never materialized.

There are a few reasons for this, like the major freelance job I got and the major development in the family business that kept me busy.

But then there are other reasons too, like how I've just been having this urge to play on Photoshop. (The results of which I'll probably be revealing over the next few weeks on Wednesdays.)

Thing is, I didn't have to do those things. I just wanted to. It never even occurred to me that I was procrastinating from my writing until I actually had to sit down and write this post.

See, I have about a month's worth of posts planned, so I have about 12 interesting topics to choose from today. Buuuuuuuut.... I just don't feel like writing.

So here I am, writing about not feeling like writing.

On the plus side, at least the words are flowing naturally here, so I'm not in severe burn-out territory.

I'm just feeling like my creative urges have shifted gear into visual forms instead. I'm still going to edit, though, since that mostly uses a different part of my brain.

But for today, I decided to give myself a pass, and just wanted to let you guys know why I was so quiet last week.

How are you doing? Do you also sometimes find your attention unexpectedly pulled to another art form?

  1. Good luck Misha - it's the way life is sometimes ... do what feels right for you ... down time is essential too - cheers Hilary

    1. Thanks! Yeah a bit of rest definitely won't do me harm. Except for where nothing gets done. XD

  2. I sometimes get that way, but I try to do something 'writing related' to make progress, and clear up time to write later (when I would be tackling the other task).

    1. Yeah that makes sense. Like checking-off things on my to-do list like "Write marketing tweets for Buffer." :-D

  3. I wasn't feeling much like writing in February. Eventually, I had to let myself off the hook, too, because there were other things going on and I just needed that down time, I guess.

I've never played around with Photoshop. I look forward to seeing the results of your experiments.

    1. I agree with you that sometimes we really do just need a breather.

I hope things go better this month for you.

  5. I've had those spells as well. Curious to see what you've been doing in Photoshop.

  6. Sorry to hear you’ve been in a writing slump lately. I often get like that with my art, too. Sometimes it’s not too extreme--I’ll still be drawing, but it’ll be silly stuff I shouldn’t be focusing on, like fan art. Other times, though, I’ll find myself doing something far less productive, like making gifs. Our brains just need to recharge with something different every once in a while, I think. Glad editing is still doable for you in the meantime, at the very least! And I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been coming up with in Photoshop--sounds fun!

    1. I really am enjoying the Photoshop stuff. I'm thinking I should really be getting around to my own cover right about now. I've only been putting it off for a year now. XD

  7. Totally get it. I only post to my blog sporadically, and I have loads of things I find I put off because I "don't feel like it." Often I think it comes down to energy. Even things I enjoy require energy, and sometimes it's simply not there. Just remember, you don't need anyone's permission to give yourself a pass :)

    1. Yeah that's very true. I think I am a bit more tired than I'd like to be. So that definitely impacts on how much I can do/want to get done.

  8. Same here. Haven't been doing much writing lately, but like you I play with images every day and enjoy it tremendously. I'm thinking: maybe I should start a special board on Pinterest dedicated to pre-made book covers. I have been making them. The only consideration that's stopping me - I don't think I'm good enough yet. But I'm improving and loving the process.

    1. I'm also thinking of making a space for pre-made covers. I haven't decided the where's and how's, though.

  9. I think it's okay to take a break from writing sometimes. I do that a lot with blogging, partly because of work and partly because I have blogger's block. And sometimes it helps because you can come back to writing more refreshed and with more ideas.

    1. That's true. Being refreshed certainly does help me be more creative.

  10. Sometimes it's good to give ourselves a break from writing, if we don't feel like doing it. And sometimes we need to push ourselves to get going. At times it's hard to know which applies!

    1. Yeah that's so true. I try doing it by instinct, but even that gets muddled when I feel pressured by a need to do something ASAP.

  11. Taking a break is not a bad thing. You'll feel up to it again soon.

  12. Mixing things up is a great way to inspire our writing. Taking time out gives the brain time to 'recover' form the often difficult job of intense concentration of the writing process.

    1. Yeah I probably should mix up my activities a bit. I feel like I've become stuck in a rut somehow.
