Rewriting

Hi all!

Firstly, a big welcome and thank you to all of the new faces that have joined up recently. I hope that you enjoy it here.

Just want to remind you all to contact me for a GPF slot. And remember, you need to please be a follower before you can post. I need one more blogger for the third week of February. If you are interested , please contact me at mishagericke@gmail.com (mishagericke(AT)gmail(dot)com).

Thanks to everyone who have shown interest so far. This is going to be awesome.

Then, I have finally joined twitter. So if you want to see my convoluted ramblings, go follow me @MishaMFB. I will follow you in return.

Finally, I am sorry for my absence yesterday, my Internet went fuzzy because it was the end of the month.

Back to the blog.

When I opened this post, I realized to my horror that I have no idea about a topic.

Luckily, it didn't take that long for me to realize that I have mentioned almost nothing about my progress.

So how am I doing?

Well...

My rewrite and first draft coincide only on the first chapter. The rest have been shifted, deleted and added to within an inch of their lives. In fact, I am finding very little of my original work that is falling into the pacing and structure as I envisaged it.

Good side to this is that I haven't been this excited about the story in a long time. The cleaning up has done wonders for the book and the plot holes are slowly being filled or removed.

So far I am absolutely loving the rewriting experience, although it doesn't really offer the same sort of exhilaration as creating something from scratch. Yes, things are substantially changed, but it still comes from a story already written. But it is especially gratifying to know that the story is getting better now.

I must say that there are some issues with the structure, but it has already been improved this time around. Hopefully I will sort out the rest when I start to edit.
Will I make my 30 April goal? At this rate, I'll make it by the end of February. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I can maintain the rate at this time though, since we have guests again. Still, in exchange for seeing these wonderful three people, I am willing to finish a little later.

What about you? Any of you rewriting? How are things going for you? And for those who are editing, querying and creating?

  2. I did a huge rewrite of a book and it was a lot of work. I honestly dislike rewriting but ya know...I think it needs to be done a lot. It's cool you can stay so upbeat about it.

  3. I tried to do all my edits and rewrites in one month. Goals are great but the burned out I loath my book feeling after that pressure cooker environment (just to see if I could do it) that wasn't healthy. With your positive attitude I'm sure your revisions will go much more smoothly!

  4. I'm glad you are loving the re-writing. I have to say it is my favourite stage, when you take the the words, sentences, paragraphs and plot of your first draft and craft it into something which does justice to your orginal idea.

  5. Sounds like you're having a good time with your rewrite! That's the way I'm fairing, so many new good ideas are coming to add to or clean things up in my book. I'm still just planning for the rewrite, but within the next week or so I should be actually rewriting the story!

I hope your rewrite continues to go this well :)

  6. Welcome to Twitter! I'm @bookworm0753 there.

Good luck with the rewrites. Mine have been going so slow. I've been averaging a chapter a week, instead of the three chapters I hoped for at the beginning of the year. Oh, well. It's getting there, but I completely get what you mean about loving it. I'm falling in love with the story and characters all over again, and it's fun.

  7. I'm in the process of rewriting my entire novel--even some of the scenes with the right events have to be redone, due to character issues. As in, there isn't any(oops!). I'm loving being able to come up with new and exciting tweaks and twists and improvements to each scene, but with the knowledge that I've finished it once, so I can finish it again. But hopefully a little faster than the last time. =) Good luck with your rewrites!

  9. Yay, how exciting! Good for you! I'm currently... mumble mumble. Okay, I'm trying to get a workable homework schedule, then put in a workable writing schedule. And still visit blogs. ;)

  10. Thanks Blogger. :-)

Michael, I've never rewritten before, so maybe I've never realized what a pain it's supposed to be. ;-P

SM I agree with you. Putting so much pressure can't be healthy for your health and/or your writing. That's one big reason why I am so careful of setting short term goals. :-)

I must say that I enjoy that aspect as well, Ellie. :-)

Sounds good, Owl. I hope your rewrite goes well. :-)

Cherie, I fell in love with my characters again too, although two of my characters might be disappearing now. But I will see. :-)

Amanda that is so true. It is so much easier to go through the rough spots when I know that I have done this story before. Good luck with your rewrites! :-)

Sounds like you're going to be busy for a while, Bish. Good luck! :-)

Aw shame, Su! I know exactly what you mean. You have my sympathy. :-)
